Year 5 Spring Term newsletter 2017

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome back! We hope you have had a good Christmas holiday, and wish you a Happy New Year. We are really looking forward to this new and exciting term and all the learning that comes with it.

Our topic for this half term is called ‘Up, Up and Away’. In Science, we will be learning about the Earth, Sun and Moon. The children will be reflecting on past scientific beliefs about the movement of the Earth, learning how the rotation of the Earth creates day and night and how the orbit of the Earth creates seasons. Weather permitting, the children will be asked to keep a Moon Diary, noting its waning and waxing transitions. In Art we will be evaluating space art. We will also be using modelling to create 3D artwork, exploring the effect of colour, light, texture and tone on man-made objects.

Yours sincerely, Miss Ross and Miss Carter

Year 5 Summer Term newsletter 2016

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to Year 5, we hope you have had a restful and enjoyable summer holiday. This term, we are looking forward to a range of interactive and fun learning opportunities through our topics.

The theme for the first half term is “Faster, Higher, Stronger” which will encompass many aspects of the curriculum from the origins of the Olympics in Ancient Greece, through to the role of the heart and lungs and the importance of healthy eating in our Science lessons. We are looking forward to Greek Day on Tuesday 27th September, which will allow the children to learn about the Greeks in a fun and interactive way. Later in the half term we will also be designing healthy snacks fit for an Olympian during Design Technology.

Reading:

All Year 5 children have received new School Reading Records, which can be used to record any reading completed at home. Children are expected to read regularly at home, at least three times a week. Asking your children questions about the text will help them to develop their retrieval and deduction skills.

Spellings:

To support the word and sentence level work that we do in school, we will be giving children a range of spelling rules and patterns to investigate. Spelling work will be sent home on a Monday in small, blue books and collected on a Friday. Please support your child in this learning.

Home learning:

Home learning will relate to your child’s Literacy, Mathematics and topic work. Home learning is given out on Thursday and collected in the following Tuesday. Children are expected to spend no more than forty-five minutes on their home learning.

The children will need their outdoor and indoor PE kits on both Mondays and Thursdays. Please ensure that children have appropriate clothing and footwear that you are happy with getting muddy. It may also be useful to have a spare pair of socks in their PE bag. If your child is not able to take part, please let us know either verbally or through a letter. Please also ensure that inhalers and medication are in school and PE kits are fully named. Beginning on Friday 16th September, we will be participating in outdoor learning, which may include visiting the forest, on alternate Friday afternoons. While the weather is fine, children can wear trainers and a waterproof coat for this activity. 5 Edison will be outdoors first (16th September) and 5 Anning will be the following week (23rd September).

This term promises to be a busy but exciting one, and should be an inspiring start to Year Five for the children. Thank you in advance for your help in supporting your child so they can achieve their full potential this year.

Yours sincerely, Miss Ross and Miss Carter

Year 5 Summer Term newsletter 2016

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome back! We hope you have had an enjoyable Easter break. We are really looking forward to this new and exciting term and all the learning that comes with it.

Our topic for this half term is called ‘Vicious Vikings’ which will include a variety of subjects. In History we will be finding out all about the Vikings; how they lived and their travels and wars. Design and Technology and Art will follow this theme closely, with the children making Viking dishes and themed artwork. We will also be looking at the Battle of Hastings and will be re-enacting this during some drama lessons. To fully bring the topic to life, we will be visiting West Stow, an Anglo Saxon Village. During the day children will have the opportunity to investigate life as an Anglo-Saxon through original objects and discover the effect of the Viking invasion. In Science, we will be learning about the lifecycles of plants. This will involve the children planting a variety of seeds and designing their own investigations to monitor this.

Rounders, Tennis and Athletics will be covered in our outdoor PE lessons this term. For the first half term in Tennis we will be focusing on hitting into a space, fast feet for movement and scoring in game situation. In Rounders we will be developing our skills of accurate overarm and underarm throwing, batting into a space and working as part of a team when fielding. In Athletics we will focusing on running, jumping and throwing, focusing on a different event each lesson. Outdoor PE will take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but this can vary so please do ensure that your child has their full PE kit with them every day.

In Computing this term we will be using 3D graphical modelling to create and explore objects.  We will review operating systems, evaluate films and animations and finally go on to create live film or animations for a specific audience.  The children will also demonstrate their understanding of copyright and ownership during this topic.
